Hello students
Now that study leave has just begun, I decided to start this blog so that you could ask any questions about the texts as you study for your exams.
We can continue our class discussion here, so do post questions or comments. I will reply as soon as possible.
I will also post additional material that you can use for your studies.
Good luck! I hope to see you all online!
regards
Ms Dinali
miss, a question...can Arjie's family be tamil christian?!its bcz of some of the things i noted like Ammachiz funeral, etc.
ReplyDeleteerandi
Hi Erandi, yes, you're right. I don't think the writer overtly says what religion they belong to, but there are enough references to aspects of Christian life in the book to suggest that they are Christians, not Hindus. When the children play "bride-bride", for instance, it's a church ceremony they're imitating, with hymns and a priest etc.
ReplyDeleteYour question is quite significant because there is so much emphasis on race in the story, but religion is almost understated. It could also be that Arjie's family is not particularly 'religious'.
Dear Miss Dinali,
ReplyDeleteI just want to clarify something about the structure of the exam paper,
Will we be given a seperate question for each poet and a short story writer?
will there be any combined questions?
Thank you,
kind regards,
lAKSHANI
Hi Lakshani, thanks for the post. But aiyoooooo.... I discussed the entire structure of the paper in class... and you have forgotten! :(
ReplyDeleteI'm just kidding. To answer your questions,
1. yes, you will be given a seperate question for each poet and short story writer.
2. No, there won't be any combined questions.
I think, just to make sure that everything is clear to everyone, I will give a description of the structure of the whole paper in a new post. In the meantime, do post any other questions that you have! Take care :)
Dear miss, thank you for opening this site its a super idea. Hi Lochana,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the post. I'm glad you like the idea of the blog. I tried looking for the article you mention but unfortunately I've had no luck. But I'll hunt some more. In the meantime, good luck with the studies, and do keep posting questions.
Thanks Miss!

Hi Malithi
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear you didn't know about the blog all this time -- I did send you all an email when I set it up on March 1st. Do you think there are others who still don’t know about this? I will resend the mail, just in case.
We discussed six of Yasmine Gooneratne’s poems in class, and the handout I gave you had seven. So you could go by them. You could also look at her poems in the two collections that we used, Rajiva Wijesinha's "An Anthology of Sri Lankan Poetry in English" and Prof D C R A Goonetilleke's "Modern Sri Lankan Poetry in English", and her own collections of poems – “Word, Bird, Motif” and “The Lizard’s Cry and other poems” – you’ll find them in the library. There are some of her poems on the web as well.
Let me know if you don’t have the poems we used in class, and I'll mail it to you. Of course, that only means that you haven't attended those sessions, and hadn't bothered to find out what went on -- bad girl!! Anyway, never mind, that's past history now :)
Good luck with the studies Malithi, and do continue to post questions.
